FEBB 6,2017 – GIORNATA INTERNAZIONALE CONTRO LE MUTILAZIONI GENITALI FEMMINILI.
An important day indeed it is. We organized several activities in Galkayo, Halabookhad, Ba’adweyn and Harfo to increase awareness on the health risk and human rights violations of FGM. Among the participants in the Galkayo activity was the Governor, Mayor, Regional representatives of the Ministries of Health and Women development. This was an indicator of the commitment by authorities to address this problem which continues to wreck the lives of many girls and women. We will be sharing with you the activity report and pictures in due course.
It is however sad that despite the many years of investment in awareness, many are still not committed to elimination of the vice in all its forms. Despite acknowledging that the practice harms the health and violates the rights of women and girls, they still insist on retaining what they call the sunna type. It is more disheartening that even some amongst policy makers are subscribing to this view. Nonetheless we remain committed to the elimination of the practice in all its forms and are not just about to give up. It is our profound hope that one day, girls and women in Somalia will be free from FGM in all its forms.
Un giorno davvero importante questo. Abbiamo organizzato diverse attività a Galkayo, Halabookhad, Ba’adweyn e Harfo per favorire lo sviluppo della coscienza rispetto alle mutilazioni genitali femminili per quanto riguarda i rischi della salute e la violazione dei diritti umani. A Galkayo hanno preso parte alla manifestazione il Governatore, il Sindaco, rappresentanti regionali dei Ministeri della Salute e dello Sviluppo Femminile.Questo ha rappresentato un indicatore dell’impegno delle autorità nell’affrontare questo problema che continua a rovinare la vita di tantissime donne e ragazze. Vi faremo avere una relazione del nostro lavoro e le relative foto.
E’ però triste vedere che malgrado l’impegno profuso in tanti anni su questo problema, sono ancora molti che non si impegnano per eliminare l’FGM in tutte le sue forme. Sebbene sia risaputo che questa pratica sia dannosa per la salute e violi i diritti di donne e ragazze, tuttavia insistono per mantenere la pratica cosiddetta sunna. E ancora più sconsolante è che anche fra i politici alcuni sostengono questo punto di vista. Noi siamo invece convinte che la pratica vada eliminata in tutte le sue forme e non intendiamo rinunciarvi. La nostra profonda speranza è che un giorno ragazze e donne della Somalia sia libere dalle FGM in qualsiasi forma.
